Lloyd Matthes , Executive Director

Lloyd is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Commission.  Lloyd holds a degree in Recreation from the University of Iowa, a Master's degree in Urban Planning from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and is a certified Economic Development Finance Professional.  Since 1970, Lloyd has work experience in four states as a recreation planner, city planner, economic development director, and city manager.  He was the only professional planner in Wisconsin to be appointed by Governor Thompson as a commissioner for a Regional Planning Commission (North Central Regional Planning) where he chaired the program committee for three years.

          

Lloyd manages the activities of the Commission including programming, budgeting, staffing, and securing funding in accordance with Commission policy.  Lloyd works with federal, state, and local organizations to strengthen local programs, develop and coordinate prospects, and promote the central Upper Peninsula.  He works on local technical assistance, transportation, CDBG, recreation planning, and coordinates with other regional commissions.

   

Michelle Dewitt, Senior Planner

Michelle is our lead person in demographic/census data, recreation plans, master plans and land use regulations, such as subdivision and zoning ordinances. She works with local and regional organizations on economic development planning and implementation.  She also provides technical assistance to local units.

Michelle is the lead person for questions on our Hazard Mitigation Plans for Alger, Delta, Dickinson, Menominee, and Schoolcraft Counties. Michelle is also the local contact person for the MSHDA façade program. 

Michelle holds a degree in Biology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Northern Michigan University.  

Peter Van Steen, Transportation Planner

Peter is our lead person in transportation planning, access management, traffic counting, non-motorized and other transportation projects.  He represents our region in statewide planning efforts and assists communities with transportation-related technical assistance. 

Peter holds a degree in Business Administration from Valparaiso University.

Steve Lenaker, GIS Coordinator

Steve specializes in developing and analyzing maps in creative ways for local units, staff, and others using various methods such as: digitizing, scanning, using GPS equipment and GIS software. Steve develops, analyzes, and maintains an extensive set of data layers used by staff for planning and map purposes and builds appropriate base maps for local and regional projects.  Steve also assists with the local and regional 911 emergency management programs, and assists other local communities developing and maintaining their GIS systems and GPS equipment. 

Steve holds degrees in Geography, with a minor in GIS & Spatial Analysis from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Valarie Norman, Administrative Services Manager

Valarie coordinates membership and the collection of local contributions, administers financial reporting for state and federal grants, and administers the Art Minigrant program.  Valarie has a degree in Accounting.

Bonnie Strem, Secretary

Bonnie is the first contact most people have with CUPPAD, and will help direct you to the appropriate staff when you call or visit our office concerning an issue.  In addition to her clerical duties, Bonnie serves as staff for the Criminal Justice Planning Committee.
